Inishmurray, Grassland island off the coast of County Sligo, Ireland
Inishmurray is a small grass-covered island off the coast of County Sligo in Ireland. It has open fields, rocky shores, and scattered stone ruins across its rolling terrain.
In the 6th century, St Molaise founded a monastery on the island, making it a center for early Christian monks. Vikings raided it in 807, yet many of the stone structures still stand today.
The island is reachable only by boat from nearby villages such as Rosses Point, and visitors should bring their own supplies since there are no shops or accommodation. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the paths are uneven and the terrain can be rocky in places.
The island holds a set of carved stones known as cursing stones, which visitors can still see inside the monastery ruins. Legend says that turning them counterclockwise could bring harm to an enemy.
