Magazine Fort

Magazine Fort is a five-sided fortification at the western edge of Phoenix Park with thick walls arranged in a geometric pattern. Inside are the historic spaces where ammunition and gunpowder were once stored.

The fort was built in 1735 as a military storage facility and served the British army as an ammunition depot for decades. After 1922, it lost its original military role when Ireland became independent.

The fort shows how Dublin was militarily defended in the 18th century and what role fortifications played in the city's layout. The five-sided shape and thick walls remain visible signs of this defensive period.

The fort sits on a ridge offering views across the park and the city, making it worthwhile to visit. Wear sturdy shoes since the paths and stairs can be uneven.

In 1939, the Irish independence movement raided the fort and removed large amounts of ammunition from storage. This was a symbolic action against British military presence in Ireland.
