Lough Key Forest Park, Nature park near Boyle, Ireland.
Lough Key Forest Park is a large park on the southern shore of Lough Key with extensive walking trails through native woodlands and cedar trees. Interconnected waterways run throughout the grounds, offering many ways to explore the landscape.
The land belonged to the Rockingham Estate until 1959, when the family sold it to the Irish Land Commission after a grand house designed by Nash burned down. This marked the change from private ownership to public parkland.
The park includes remnants of 19th-century underground servant tunnels, historic bridges, an ice house, and multiple architectural elements from the former estate.
The park has a modern visitor center with restaurants and equipment rentals to support different activities. Plan ahead to decide which activities interest you, whether boating, camping, fishing, orienteering, or cycling.
The grounds have Ireland's first tree canopy walk, an elevated steel and timber pathway running through the forest canopy. This structure offers an unusual view of the woodland from above.
