Puck's Castle

Puck's Castle is a three-story stone fortified house in Rathmichael, County Dublin, set within grazing pastures. The structure features thick stone walls built to withstand attacks and remains a distinctive landmark in the rural landscape.

Built in 1537 by Peter Talbot, this structure served as a defensive position against raids from the O'Toole clan. Its construction reflects the need for fortification during a period of regional conflict in the area.

The name comes from 'Púca', a being from Celtic folklore said to inhabit wild places. This connection shows how local beliefs about the supernatural remain part of the place's identity today.

Access is via Puck's Castle Lane where parking is limited near the gated entrance. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the path crosses pasture land with potentially muddy or uneven ground.

Jane Eleanor Sherrard vanished without trace in 1867 while picking flowers near the castle. This disappearance remains part of the place's local mystery and the stories people continue to tell about it.
