Yarkon River Mouth Lighthouse

The Yarkon River Mouth Lighthouse is a concrete tower standing where the river meets the Mediterranean in Tel Aviv. It rises about 17 meters and still displays remnants of its original black and white checkerboard pattern on the exterior.

British colonial authorities built this lighthouse between 1934 and 1935 to guide ships away from dangerous sandbars near the shore. It became part of Tel Aviv's effort to establish itself as a modern port city during that period.

The lighthouse marks a place where the city connected with maritime trade and fishing. You can see how the location was once central to daily harbor activities and ship movements.

A wooden boardwalk built in 2007 circles the lighthouse site, allowing visitors to view the structure and surroundings from multiple angles. The location is easy to reach and sits along a public beach area where the river meets the sea.

Excavations at the site uncovered ruins of two Assyrian fortresses dating back to the 8th century BCE beneath the lighthouse area. These findings reveal that this coastal location held strategic importance thousands of years before the modern city developed.
