Brahma Temple, Bindusagar

Brahma Temple is a Hindu sanctuary near Bindusagar Lake in Bhubaneswar with a central shrine and four smaller shrines positioned at the corners. The structure displays traditional Kalinga architectural style with detailed stone carvings covering its walls and surfaces.

The sanctuary was built in 1058 during the Somavamsi dynasty, commissioned by Kolavatidevi, the mother of King Udyota Kesari of Bhubaneswar. This establishment occurred during a period of architectural and artistic growth in the region.

The temple walls display stone carvings showing musicians, dancers, and religious figures that reflect the artistic traditions of ancient Odisha. These sculptures tell stories from everyday life and spiritual practices that held meaning for the people of the region.

The sanctuary is located in eastern Bhubaneswar and is open daily, with the custom of entering barefoot expected inside. The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon when fewer visitors are present.

The sanctuary uses iron beams in its construction, making it one of the earliest examples of metal reinforcement in Indian religious architecture. This building technique was far ahead of its time and shows the technical knowledge of the builders.
