Garh Panchkot, Ancient fort in Purulia, India.
Garh Panchkot is a fort in the Neturia community development block of Purulia, India, located at the base of the Panchet Hills and built from stone structures, temples, and defensive walls. The complex spans a wide area and includes watchtowers and courtyards that served different religious and military purposes.
The Singh Deo dynasty built the complex in the 16th century as a military stronghold and used it for several generations to control the region. Maratha forces destroyed large parts of the fortifications in the 18th century as they moved through this area.
The name refers to the five hills that surround the site, and many residents from nearby villages still regard the temples inside the walls as sacred places. Families come here on special occasions to pray and leave offerings.
Roads connect the site to Purulia, and visitors can find lodging nearby, including a tent house and a nature resort. Walking through the different parts of the complex takes several hours, and sturdy footwear is recommended.
The site sits above Panchet Lake, which was created by a dam in the 1950s. When water levels drop, remains of the old city of Telkupi become visible beneath the surface.
