Hill Palace, Museum in Kerala, India
Hill Palace is a museum in Kerala, India, and sits on a large estate with many buildings in the traditional style of the region. The halls display collections that fill several rooms and cover different subject areas.
The estate was built in the second half of the 19th century and served the royal family as a residence and administrative seat. After Indian independence the grounds passed into state ownership and were opened to the public.
The name comes from the time when Kochi royalty lived here and received guests. Visitors today see rooms with royal furniture, porcelain and weapons that show how earlier residents spent their days.
The grounds are open to visitors six days a week, with a lunch break in the early afternoon. The paths between individual buildings take some time to walk, so a visit of several hours is worthwhile.
One of the halls preserves an original lift from England and Victorian tiles with flower motifs. These elements give insight into the technical equipment of large houses at the end of the 19th century.
