Honnemaradu, Adventure lake in Sagara, India.
Honnemaradu is a reservoir on the Sharavathi River in Karnataka, surrounded by forested hills on all sides. The water sits wide and open, with tree-covered ridges visible from most parts of the lake.
The reservoir was formed in the mid-20th century when the Linganamakki Dam was built across the Sharavathi River, flooding the valley below. Before the dam, the area held villages and farmland that now lie beneath the water.
Local fishermen take visitors on traditional coracle rides, sharing their knowledge of the waterways and fishing methods used here.
A permit from the local adventure management group is needed before joining any water activity on the lake, so it helps to plan ahead. The area can be wet and muddy near the shore, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
When water levels drop, several small islands rise out of the lake and can be used as overnight camping spots far from the shore. The shape and number of these islands change with the seasons, so no two visits look quite the same.
