Unchalli Falls

Unchalli Falls is a waterfall in Uttara Kannada district where the Aghanashini River drops over a steep cliff surrounded by dense forest. The cascade descends through layers of rock and creates a powerful water curtain visible from multiple viewing angles.

A British district official documented the falls in 1845, an event that led to the alternative name Lushington Falls. This early record brought the location to wider attention and established it as a notable site in the region.

Local residents refer to the waterfall as Keppa Joga, reflecting the thunderous sound that echoes through the surrounding valleys.

To reach the falls, visitors walk on a forest trail that covers about one kilometer from the parking area to marked viewing platforms. Wear sturdy shoes as the path can be muddy and the terrain is uneven in places.

On full moon nights, the falling water creates a moonbow, a rare natural arc of light that occurs at only a handful of locations worldwide. This luminous arc forms when moonlight reflects through the water droplets rather than sunlight, creating a ghostly pale glow.
