Jog Falls, Waterfall in Karnataka, India

Jog Falls is a waterfall in Karnataka, India, where the Sharavathi River drops in four separate cascades across 253 meters (830 feet) from a rocky bed measuring 230 meters (755 feet) wide. The water falls freely into a deep pool at the base of the cliff and creates a massive cloud of mist.

The hydroelectric plant nearby began operations in 1948 as the Krishna Rajendra project, named after the ruler of Mysore. The dam upstream has since influenced the natural flow of water and changed how the falls appear depending on the season.

The four segments carry names reflecting Indian heritage: Raja meaning king, Roarer, Rocket, and Rani meaning queen. Visitors can observe how water flows through these separate channels and creates different patterns and sounds.

Visitors need to navigate 1500 steps to reach the base, with viewing platforms at Watkins Point and Bombay Bungalow. The descent requires good fitness, and visitors should wear sturdy shoes and watch for slippery surfaces during the rainy season.

During monsoon season, the water volume increases so much that this waterfall surpasses Kaieteur Falls in Guyana in height and flow. The fine droplets in the air often form rainbows that hover over the pool on sunny afternoons.
