Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is located on the shores of Vembanad Lake and hosts numerous resident and migratory bird species year-round. The terrain features waterways and vegetation-covered areas that create natural habitats for diverse bird populations.

The region underwent major transformation in 1847 when marshy areas were converted into cultivated fields. This change eventually led to the creation of a site with ecological diversity that later became protected.

Local residents maintain traditions through activities such as fishing, rice cultivation, and preparing regional dishes for sanctuary visitors using fresh local ingredients.

Early morning and late evening are the best times for observing birds when they are most active. Bringing binoculars and wearing comfortable shoes will help you make the most of your visit.

The site received a National Tourism Award in 2015-16 for being an exemplary responsible tourism project. This recognition reflects how the place balances visitor experience with natural conservation.
