Kundalpur, Jain pilgrimage site in Damoh district, India
Kundalpur is a pilgrimage complex with 64 temples in the Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh, with 42 positioned on a hilltop and 22 clustered at its base. The temples are arranged around Vardhaman Sagar pond, creating a layered sanctuary with multiple levels and interconnected pathways.
The Bade Baba temple was founded in the 6th century and underwent major reconstruction in the 18th century with patronage from Maharaja Chhatrasal of the Bundela dynasty. This renovation established the complex's present form, which has remained a pilgrimage destination since then.
The main temple displays a prominent statue of Rishabhanatha seated in lotus position, accompanied by representations of Parshvanatha on either side. Local visitors approach these figures with reverence as central points of worship and meditation throughout the year.
The site is located roughly 35 kilometers from Damoh railway station and about 150 kilometers from Jabalpur airport, with regular bus and car access available. The best time to visit is between October and March, when weather conditions are pleasant and the paths are easier to navigate.
A temple called Jal Mandir stands isolated in the middle of Vardhaman Sagar pond, creating an unusual sight of a shrine surrounded entirely by water. This structure is accessible by footbridges or temporary passages during religious observances.
