Sheshnag Lake, Sacred lake in Pahalgam, India
Sheshnag Lake is a mountain body of water located in the Pahalgam region of Kashmir at about 3,590 meters (11,800 feet) elevation in Anantnag district. Its emerald-colored waters are fed by snowmelt and glacial runoff from the surrounding peaks.
The lake was formed long ago when intense rainfall carved deep grooves into the mountains over extended periods. This natural process created the basin that now collects water from melting snow and glacial sources.
The name refers to a legendary serpent king from Hindu mythology, a figure central to creation stories in the tradition. Locals and pilgrims connect this mythological identity to the water itself, viewing it as a sacred place of spiritual significance.
Visitors reach the lake after traveling from Srinagar and then trekking from Chandanwari into the higher elevations. The best visiting time is from June through September when the mountain trails are clear and safe to walk.
During winter the entire surface turns into solid ice, while summer brings mountain flowers blooming across the meadows around the water. These seasonal transformations make a return visit reveal a completely different landscape.
