Mamaleshwar Temple

Mamaleshwar Temple sits at 2,200 meters elevation on the banks of the Lidder River in the Kashmir Valley and features traditional stone construction. Inside, a central Shiva Linga serves as the main object of worship, with a smaller two-faced Nandi figure positioned in the right corner.

The temple was constructed around 400 AD and underwent significant restoration work during the medieval period. A golden finial was added to its structure during the reign of King Jayasimha.

This temple serves as a spiritual center where devotees gather to worship and perform rituals dedicated to Shiva. The regular ceremonies and seasonal celebrations reflect how central this place remains to the local faith community.

The temple remains accessible throughout the year, though visitors should prepare for the high altitude where the air is thinner. Appropriate footwear and clothing are important, as mountain paths can become difficult during winter months.

According to local mythology, this is the sacred site where Ganesha received his elephant head following an encounter between Lord Shiva and Parvati. This story holds deep spiritual meaning for pilgrims who visit the temple.
