Tarsar Lake, Alpine lake in Anantnag district, India.
Tarsar Lake is a high alpine body of water in the Anantnag region that sits at approximately 3,795 meters elevation. Mountains encircle it and reflect in the clear water, creating mirror-like surfaces especially visible during summer months.
The lake was mentioned in the poetry of Yusuf Shah Chak, a ruler from the 16th century, who documented its presence in Kashmir. This written record shows the water body has been known in the region for centuries.
Pastoral communities use the meadows surrounding the lake as summer grazing grounds for their herds. This way of life shapes the character of the landscape during the warm months.
The lake is accessible only from June to September and is reached via a two-day trek starting from Aru Valley. Visitors should bring camping equipment and hire local guides for the journey.
The water shifts through different colors as daylight progresses, created by how sunlight interacts with the lake's characteristics and mountain reflections. This color show results from the purity of the water and the surrounding peaks.
