Shankaracharya hill, Hindu temple on a mountain in Srinagar, India

The Shankaracharya temple stands at 1852 meters on top of a volcanic hill, providing views of Dal Lake and the Kashmir Valley.

King Gopaditya established the temple around 371 BCE, making it one of the oldest religious structures in the Kashmir region.

The temple receives numerous Hindu pilgrims during festivals, with a special ceremony during Amarnath Yatra bringing Shiva's holy mace to the site.

Visitors need to climb 200 stone steps to reach the summit, with spring and autumn offering the most suitable conditions for the ascent.

The temple walls contain geological elements from the Permian era, preserving natural formations within its ancient structure.
