Shalimar Bagh, Mogul garden in Srinagar, India.

Shalimar Bagh is a terraced garden in Srinagar, India, arranged across three rising levels with water channels, geometric patterns, and flowering plants spanning roughly 12 hectares. The pavilions of dark stone stand along the central axis and frame the fountains, while the beds are planted with roses, irises, and other seasonal blooms.

Emperor Jahangir commissioned the garden from 1616 onward for his consort Nur Jahan, combining Persian designs with the landscape of Kashmir. Later rulers expanded the site in the 17th and 18th centuries, adding further pavilions and water elements.

The name translates to Abode of Love and reflects the connection between royal devotion and Persian garden art. Visitors today see families and couples strolling between the flower beds while local photographers use the pavilions as backdrops.

The garden opens daily from sunrise to sunset and is best visited between April and October during the flowering season. The paths are mostly level and well maintained, so walking between the terraces poses few difficulties.

A system of natural springs feeds the channels and provides constant cooling that is noticeable on hot days. The highest pavilion once served as a private retreat for the emperor and still offers a wide view over the entire layout.
