Sher Garhi Palace

Sher Garhi Palace is a complex of ruins located on a riverbank in Srinagar that blends neoclassical and other architectural styles from different periods of construction. The structures display features including stone walls, columned halls, and deteriorating rooms spread across the property.

The complex was established in the late 1700s and was then inhabited and modified by various ruling dynasties over the following centuries. Successive rulers each left their mark on the buildings and grounds.

The palace served as a seat of power for successive rulers across centuries, with its spaces revealing traces of their different beliefs and artistic preferences. The wall paintings and decorations show how each dynasty chose to display its authority and taste.

The site sits beside a river and is easily reached from the city center, with the complex accessible on foot once you arrive. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear and expect uneven ground and steep stairs throughout the property.

Beneath the current ruins lie remains of an even older royal residence dating back over a thousand years, showing this spot was a center of power across multiple millennia. The layers of history are literally stacked on top of one another here.
