Kolahoi Glacier, Himalayan glacier in Anantnag district, India

Kolahoi Glacier sits below Mount Kolahoi and feeds the Lidder River flowing through Kashmir Valley. The ice field stretches across several kilometers and has long served as a water source for the valleys below.

The first recorded climb of the adjacent Kolahoi Peak happened in 1912 when British explorer Dr. Ernest Neve reached the summit. This climb marked the start of organized mountaineering activities in the area.

Local communities view this glacier and the surrounding peaks as sacred places tied to their spiritual beliefs and way of life. These connections shape how people move through and care for the high-altitude landscape today.

Access to this glacier involves trekking along a difficult mountain path that starts from Aru village near Pahalgam. Plan your visit between March and October when the routes are passable and weather conditions are most favorable.

The ice field has noticeably shrunk since the middle of the 20th century to the early 2000s. This visible change shows how sensitive the high-altitude environment is to warming trends.
