Pahalgam, Mountain town in Anantnag district, India.
Pahalgam is a mountain town in Anantnag district of the Kashmir region, spreading along the Lidder River. The settlement combines a small urban core with surrounding villages scattered across slopes and valleys.
The settlement became an official administrative center in the 20th century after existing for centuries as a herding community. Modern infrastructure grew after Indian independence, when the area gained better connections to the wider road network.
The name means 'village of shepherds', reflecting the area's traditional pastoral roots. Local families still keep small flocks and sell wool products in the bazaar during the warmer months.
The main road through the settlement remains passable most of the year, while side roads to remote villages can be unpaved and slippery during rain. Local shops often open late in the morning and close before dusk sets in.
The Lidder River splits the settlement in two, and many locals cross it daily on narrow wooden bridges. These simple structures are rebuilt each year after the snowmelt, when the water runs particularly strong.
