Semmozhi Poonga, Botanical park in Teynampet, Chennai, India
Semmozhi Poonga is a botanical park in Teynampet, a neighborhood of Chennai in southern India's Tamil Nadu state. The grounds stretch across a green area with paved walkways, water features, flower beds, and themed sections showcasing native and tropical vegetation.
The park opened in 2010 and was one of the first major green projects by the Tamil Nadu government for the growing metropolis. The site previously served other urban purposes and was redesigned to provide recreation space and nature education.
The name means Garden of Classical Language and honors the literary heritage of Tamil culture. Visitors find labels in Tamil and English explaining plants and their traditional uses in the region.
The park is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM and has benches along the paths and drinking water stations. Photography is allowed in marked areas, and the paths are mostly level and easy to walk for visitors of all ages.
Some sections arrange plants by ecological zones of Tamil Nadu, from coastal vegetation to species from higher elevations. This layout helps visitors grasp the plant diversity of the state within a limited space.
