Kalijai, Hindu temple on island in Chilika Lake, Odisha, India
Kalijai is a Hindu temple on a small island in Chilika Lake, Odisha. The structure shows carved wooden doors and a low roof with a central shrine that visitors reach by stone steps, while fishing boats rest along the shore.
Fishermen worshipped the deity at this spot for generations before a permanent structure rose in the 16th century. Later renovations added steps and docking areas to ease access for pilgrims during the monsoon season.
The name Kalijai comes from a young woman who, according to legend, vanished on the island and became a deity. Worshippers ring bells at the shrine and tie colored threads to branches to express personal wishes and ask for protection.
Boats depart from the mainland through morning and afternoon, with trips safest during calm water. Visitors should bring sun protection and wear slip-resistant shoes as steps can become slippery when wet.
The island sits low enough that strong high water reaches the lower steps and sometimes wets visitors' feet. On some days dolphins swim near the island, often surprising travelers.
