Eisenkappel-Vellach, municipality in Völkermarkt District, Carinthia, Austria
Eisenkappel-Vellach is a small municipality in Austria located in the Völkermarkt District, situated in a valley surrounded by mountain ranges. The town has quiet streets, historic buildings, and is shaped by the Vellach creek running from the Alpine peaks toward the Drava River.
The region has Roman roots, with the Romans using the Seeberg Pass as an ancient trade route through the Alps. A settlement grew around a chapel, from which the town's name derives, and gained the right to hold markets in the 13th century, developing into a center for salt and iron trade.
The name Eisenkappel-Vellach comes from a chapel that once belonged to the Bishop of Brixen and gave the settlement its identity. Today, the town shows a blend of German and Slovene-speaking communities living side by side in a peaceful rhythm.
The town is easily accessible via two mountain passes toward Slovenia, with the Seeberg Pass being a historic route since Roman times. Visitors should bring comfortable walking shoes as exploring the surrounding valleys, forests, and nearby caves on foot is the best way to experience the area.
The municipality is notable for being led since 2009 by a mayor from the Slovene minority party Enotna Lista, making it the only town in Carinthia with a Slovene-speaking mayor. This reflects the long history of cultural coexistence between German and Slovene populations.
