St. Sebastian's Cemetery, Heritage cemetery in Altstadt, Austria.
St. Sebastian's Cemetery is a historic burial ground in the St. Sebastian district of Salzburg's old town, enclosed by covered arcades lined with ornate tombs and epitaphs. At the center of the grounds stands the Gabriel Chapel, a round structure covered in colored tiles that serves as the visual focal point of the space.
The cemetery was laid out at the end of the 16th century, when Salzburg needed a new burial ground outside the medieval city walls. The Gabriel Chapel at its center was built at the request of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who was later buried there himself.
The cemetery is still in active use today, and locals often visit to tend to family graves or simply walk through. Along the arcades, you can read inscriptions in several languages, reflecting the many different backgrounds of those buried here over the centuries.
The cemetery is open every day from early morning until dusk and can be visited free of charge. The paths between the arcades and the central area have different levels, so sturdy shoes are a good idea.
Anna Maria Mozart, the mother of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is commemorated here with a memorial stone, even though she died in Paris and is buried there. Her father Leopold Mozart, however, is actually buried in this cemetery, making it a real stop for anyone curious about the Mozart family.
