Gymnasium Wasagasse

Gymnasium Wasagasse, Secondary school in Alsergrund district, Vienna, Austria

Gymnasium Wasagasse is a secondary school in the Alsergrund district, housed in a grand building designed by architect Heinrich von Ferstel in 1871 at Wasagasse 10. The institution also operates an additional sports facility at Wasagasse 20 for its educational programs.

The school was designed by renowned architect Heinrich von Ferstel in 1871 and served as an important educational center in the district. After the 1938 Anschluss, Nazi authorities repurposed the original building for administrative functions, forcing the school to relocate to Schottengymnasium's premises.

The school features a commemorative plaque installed in 2007 through the Erinnern project, honoring the experiences of former Jewish students during World War II. This reminder is visible to anyone walking through the building and serves as a connection to the school's past.

The main building is located at Wasagasse 10, where you can see the historic architecture, while the sports facility is at Wasagasse 20. Both locations are close to each other and easy to explore.

Two notable alumni shaped their respective fields: Nobel laureate Karl Landsteiner made major discoveries in medicine, and composer Ernest Gold went on to win Academy Awards. These accomplished figures demonstrate the school's influence on careers that reached international prominence.
