Orthopädisches Krankenhaus Gersthof, Medical center in Währing, Austria.
The Orthopädisches Krankenhaus Gersthof is a building in Vienna combining late Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Expressionist design elements with monumental arcades on its main front. The structure spans 16,000 square meters and displays the architectural language typical of 1920s Vienna.
The building was constructed between 1924 and 1926 as a maternity hospital for Vienna's merchant community and was later converted into an orthopedic center. After closing in 2019, this protected monument underwent transformation for new uses.
The garden holds a sculpture called 'Mother and Child' from the building's construction period, reflecting its origins as a maternity hospital. This artwork shows what the place meant to families and their beginnings.
Access to the building is limited as it is a protected monument currently undergoing renovation. Visitors can view the exterior and garden from outside, but should check in advance whether tours are available.
The former operating rooms of this protected monument are being converted into a multipurpose hall while preserving its architectural heritage. This transformation shows how historic spaces can be adapted for new functions while respecting what came before.
