Trisselwand, Mountain summit in Styria, Austria
Trisselwand is a summit in the Totes Gebirge range in Styria, Austria, reaching 1,754 meters above sea level. The peak features steep limestone faces on its north side and more varied terrain across its other slopes.
The Totes Gebirge range, where this peak stands, was opened to mountaineers in the late 19th century, when first ascents across the area were recorded for the first time. Those early climbs established the routes that are still used today.
The name Trisselwand refers to the steep rock wall that defines the look of the peak and makes it easy to recognize from the valleys below. Hikers from the region treat it as a familiar day destination rather than a technical climb.
The ascent begins at Tressensattel and follows a marked trail to the top, so sturdy boots and enough water are recommended before setting off. The route suits experienced hikers, as parts of the path become steep and rocky.
The exposed limestone layers on the north face preserve a record of Alpine mountain-building that unfolded over tens of millions of years. Visitors who look closely at the rock surface can spot different structural formations caused by tectonic movement.
