Schwarzmooskogel-Höhlensystem, Cave system in Altaussee, Austria.
The Schwarzmooskogel cave system extends through 137 kilometers of passages in the Totes Gebirge mountain range of Styria.
The initial discovery in 1929 led to systematic exploration starting in 1938, with the Cambridge University Caving Club contributing major findings from 1976.
The cave system represents a significant research site for Austrian speleology groups, contributing to the documentation of over 15,000 caves nationwide.
Access to the cave system requires specialized equipment, including 70-meter ropes with high edge resistance and crampons for icy sections.
The Schneevulkanhalle chamber contains a 50-meter high snow cone and multiple ice stalagmites within its 130-meter length.
