Altaussee

Altaussee is a spa town in Liezen District that spreads along the shores of a clear alpine lake, framed by steep limestone walls and forested slopes in the Salzkammergut Alps. The settlement sits at over 700 meters above sea level and combines narrow lanes with traditional alpine architecture, while the surrounding area offers numerous footpaths and quiet valleys.

Salt extraction in Altaussee was first mentioned in the 12th century and developed over the centuries into an important economic activity for the region. During the Second World War, the tunnels served as hiding places for numerous artworks, which were later recovered by the Allies.

During the 19th century, Altaussee emerged as a summer destination for notable figures including Gustav Mahler, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Theodor Herzl.

Several marked hiking trails lead to the surrounding peaks, including Loser, Trisselwand, and Sandling, with some routes featuring steep sections. The lakeshore is accessible via paths suitable for different fitness levels and can be visited throughout the year.

The salt deposits beneath Altaussee are among the largest in Austria and remain in active use today. The underground chambers attract both visitors and researchers interested in the geological formations and the industrial past.
