Schönberg-Höhlensystem, Cave system in Altaussee and Ebensee, Austria
The Schönberg Cave System extends through 155 kilometers of passages, featuring 35 entrances across the limestone formations of the Dead Mountains.
Discovered in 1966, the cave network gained recognition in 2007 when connections between the Feuertal-Höhlensystem and Raucherkarhöhle sections were established.
The Landesverein für Höhlenkunde Oberösterreich leads scientific research expeditions, contributing to the understanding of karst landscapes in the Northern Limestone Alps.
The Feuertal ice cave entrance, accessible from Ebenseer Hochkogelhaus, provides the most direct route into the main chambers of the cave system.
The cave system ranks as Austria's longest and the world's 14th longest, with passages reaching depths of 1,061 meters through complex branching structures.
