Schönberg-Höhlensystem

The Schönberg Cave System is an extensive network of underground passages carved through limestone in the mountains between Altaussee and Ebensee. The formation consists of multiple entrances and branches into complex tunnel networks shaped by water flow over thousands of years.

The cave was not scientifically documented until the 1960s, when researchers discovered its vast extent. About 40 years later, experts found that separate known cave systems in the region were connected underground.

The cave network draws researchers and explorers interested in understanding how water shapes limestone landscapes. Visitors can observe the marked passages and routes that reflect decades of scientific study and discovery.

Access is mainly through the Feuertal entrance, which is reached via a hiking path. Visitors should bring warm clothing since it stays cool underground, and sturdy shoes are important for navigating uneven passages.

The cave system contains several underground lakes and streams that swell noticeably during wet seasons. These flowing waterways are visible to visitors and show how water continues to shape the landscape.
