Assumption of Mary Monastery, Čajniče

The Assumption of Mary Monastery in Čajniče is a religious building complex with two adjacent churches, the older one dating from the 15th century and standing next to a newer structure from 1857. The site holds various religious objects and artworks that can be seen in the churches and an attached museum.

The monastery was founded in 1863 and belongs to the Metropolitanate of Dabar-Bosna. The older church buildings on the site date back to the medieval period, showing that this place has a long past with important interruptions.

The monastery preserves the Čajniče Gospel, a medieval manuscript written in Bosnian Cyrillic script that visitors can observe during their tour. This old text shows how religious writings were created and maintained in the region.

The monastery preserves the so-called Čajniče Beauty, a two-sided painted icon from the 14th century by a Byzantine artist. This work is remarkable because religious icons of that era were rarely made on both sides.
