Church of Saint George, Sopotnica, Serbian Orthodox church in Sopotnica, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Church of Saint George stands on the left bank of the Drina River, roughly four kilometers from Goraze at the foot of Gradina Hill. The structure is an ensemble of connected buildings that combine Romanesque and Gothic features.
Construction began in 1446 under the patronage of Stefan Vukcic Kosaca, who funded religious buildings across the region. The site later became a center for religious manuscript production.
The church displays Romanesque forms mixed with Gothic elements and preserves Roman stone panels that coastal craftsmen fitted during its construction. This blend of different building techniques reflects the craft traditions that were common in the region at the time.
The church is accessible by the main road connecting Goraze and Visegrad, which also provides access to the surrounding landscape. The riverside location allows for exploring paths along the banks and nearby hills.
Between 1519 and 1526, the site housed the first printing press in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It produced important religious texts, including the Gorazdan Trebnik, which circulated throughout the region.
