Krakra

The fortress stands on a strategic hilltop position with stone walls extending across multiple levels of the fortified complex at 42.59N, 23.02E.

The fortress dates from the 9th century and gained prominence under Bulgarian noble Krakra, who successfully defended it against Byzantine sieges in 1004 and 1016.

Archaeological investigations at the fortress continue to uncover artifacts that document the daily activities of medieval Bulgarian military and civilian life.

Visitors can reach the fortress by following marked paths from central Pernik, with guided tours available through the regional historical museum.

The fortress complex incorporated 36 defensive towers within its structure, making it one of the largest medieval Bulgarian fortification systems.
