Bebresh Viaduct, Girder bridge at Vitinya Pass, Bulgaria
The Bebresh Viaduct is a concrete bridge that spans 720 meters across a deep valley in the Stara Planina mountains. Twelve sections of 60 meters each rest on massive concrete pillars that rise up to 120 meters from the ground.
The bridge was built in the early 1980s and opened in 1985 to improve the motorway connection through the mountains. It was part of a larger infrastructure program that modernized transportation options across Bulgaria.
The name comes from a village in the area, and the structure has become a familiar landmark for travelers crossing the mountains. Many people drive over it regularly without thinking about the engineering effort required to build such a passage through the rock.
The viaduct sits east of Sofia on the A2 motorway and serves as a key traffic link through the mountains. Drivers should be prepared for mountain conditions and exercise care during poor weather or winter travel.
The concrete supports were cast using a special method where large sections were manufactured directly at the construction site. This innovative approach was a solution at the time to manage difficult mountain conditions during building.
