Eleshnitsa Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Eleshnitsa, Bulgaria.
Eleshnitsa Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in a village in Bulgaria, situated at the base of Mount Murgash near the Yakovishtitsa River. It is surrounded by stone walls and features a church building measuring roughly 7 by 14 meters inside.
The monastery was founded in 1301 and thus carries a history spanning more than seven centuries. In 1876 it provided shelter to independence fighters following the defeat of Botev's rebels against Ottoman rule.
The walls inside contain frescoes from the 16th and 17th centuries showing the Assumption of Mary and portraits of Kings David and Solomon. These religious images reflect the artistic traditions that took root in this region.
The monastery sits about 4 kilometers north of Eleshnitsa village and functions as an active religious center even though it currently has no resident monks. It is wise to check ahead locally before visiting to understand access conditions and any visiting times that may apply.
The monastery preserves ancient written documents including a gospel and psalter, which are now held at the National Church Historical and Archaeological Museum in Sofia. These manuscripts offer glimpses into the religious scholarship that flourished here.
