Saint-Lazare, Town in Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Quebec, Canada
Saint-Lazare is a town in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region of the Canadian province of Quebec, located west of Montreal. Its territory covers residential neighborhoods, wooded areas, and open fields, including the La Pinière forest.
The town was founded in 1875 and grew first as a farming community where settlers raised crops and livestock. Over the following decades, its population grew steadily and it shifted from a rural village into a residential town.
Saint-Lazare is well known in the region for its equestrian competitions, which draw riders and spectators every year. The town coat of arms features a fleur-de-lys and a rose, symbols that reflect its French- and English-speaking communities side by side.
A car is helpful in Saint-Lazare since the town is spread out and most points of interest are not clustered together. Montreal is within easy reach, making it a practical base or day trip destination from the wider metro area.
Saint-Lazare once had a train station known as the "gare fleurie," which served Canadian Pacific Railway passengers for years. Passenger service stopped in 1960 and the station was torn down, but older residents still remember it as a central part of town life.
