Wanapitei Lake, Impact crater lake in Greater Sudbury, Canada.

Wanapitei Lake formed when a meteorite struck the earth long ago, leaving behind a depression that eventually filled with water. The body of water has an unusual angular shape and sits completely within a single city's boundaries.

A meteorite struck this location around 37 million years ago, creating an impact basin that later filled with water. Indigenous peoples and settlers who arrived much later recognized the site's geological significance.

The Anishinaabe people named this body of water after its distinctive shape that catches the eye when viewing it from the shore. Local names and geography connect to how Indigenous communities understood and described their landscape.

The water is quite deep, so staying on marked paths and designated viewpoints is wise when exploring the shore. Multiple access points around the lake make it easy to find a spot that suits your visit.

It holds the distinction of being the largest body of water of its kind that lies entirely within a single city's boundaries. This rare combination of geology and geography makes it one of a kind worldwide.
