Honest Ed's, Department store in Mirvish Village, Toronto, Canada
Honest Ed's was a discount department store occupying an entire city block at Bloor and Bathurst Streets, distinguished by enormous red and yellow illuminated signs powered by approximately 23,000 light bulbs. The structure dominated the streetscape and served multiple retail purposes across its vast floor space.
Ed and Anne Mirvish founded the discount store in 1948, building on their earlier retail experience from 1943. The business grew over decades to become a neighborhood landmark before closing permanently at the end of 2016.
The store served as a gathering place for immigrant and working-class shoppers who found affordable goods and participated in annual holiday giveaways that became local traditions. It held a special role in the community beyond its function as a retailer.
The location is no longer operating as a retail business since it closed at the end of 2016 and was subsequently redeveloped. The site now contains Mirvish Village, a mixed-use development with residential and retail spaces.
The illuminated signs were installed in 1948 and remained a distinctive landmark for over seven decades, lighting up the neighborhood at night. When the store closed in 2016, the property sold for 100 million dollars and was transformed into a modern residential complex.
