Woodside National Historic Site, National historic estate in Kitchener, Canada
Woodside is a Victorian estate in Kitchener, Ontario, administered by Parks Canada as a national historic site and recognized federal heritage building. The property includes a two-story house at 528 Wellington Street North, surrounded by lawns, trees, walking paths, and wetland areas.
The house was built in 1853 and served as the childhood home of William Lyon Mackenzie King between 1886 and 1893, before he became one of Canada's longest-serving prime ministers. In 1942, it was reconstructed under his personal direction, after which it was protected as a heritage site.
The furnished rooms inside the house show how a well-off Canadian family lived in the late 1800s, with original objects, furniture, and personal items still in place. Walking through the rooms gives a sense of daily routines and domestic life from that period.
The grounds are easy to walk through, with maintained paths linking the house, garden areas, and natural zones. The interior of the house is open seasonally, so it is worth checking ahead if you want to visit the furnished rooms.
When Mackenzie King directed the 1942 reconstruction, he relied mainly on his own childhood memories rather than on historical records. This means the house as it stands today reflects his personal recollection of the past more than an exact restoration of the original.
