THEMUSEUM occupies the former Goudie's Department Store building in downtown Kitchener, a structure owned by city councillor Arthur Russell Goudie from 1925 until the store closed in 1988. Its galleries hold permanent and temporary exhibitions designed for visitors of all ages, and the museum also hosts TriCon, a multi-day anime, comic book and sci-fi convention.

The museum opened in 2003 inside what was once Goudies Department Store, which had sat empty for about 15 years before this conversion. This renovation brought new purpose to a historic downtown building.

The Underground Studio MakerSpace blends artistic creation with technology projects, inviting visitors to develop and test their own ideas hands-on. People of all ages work together to build and experiment in this shared creative space.

The building began as Goudie's Department Store, one of western Ontario's first and eventually largest department stores, owned from 1925 by former city council member Arthur Russell Goudie; it closed in 1988. The storefront then changed hands several times before reopening in 2003 as the Waterloo Regional Children's Museum, renamed THEMUSEUM in 2010.
