Freimans, Department store building at Rideau Street in Ottawa, Canada
Freimans is a six-story building on Rideau Street in downtown Ottawa that once operated as a major department store. The building connects the street to a shopping center that leads toward the Byward Market area.
The store was founded in 1918 by Archibald J. Freiman, an immigrant who built it into one of Ottawa's most prominent retail businesses. In 1972, the Hudson's Bay Company acquired it, and the building became known as The Bay.
The store shaped how people shopped in Ottawa by introducing modern retail practices that became common in stores everywhere. Walking through it, you can sense its role in transforming shopping from a simple transaction into a social activity.
The building is in downtown Ottawa and easy to reach on foot from surrounding streets and the Byward Market area. Visiting during the day works best, as the nearby shops and market stalls are open and the area is more active.
In the 1930s, the store's owner won a court case against a police officer who had been encouraging people to boycott the business because of his Jewish background. The ruling was one of the earliest legal victories against discrimination in Canada.
