Daly Building, Historic department store site on Rideau Street, Ottawa, Canada
The Daly Building is a six-story commercial structure at the corner of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive in Ottawa. Its facade combines steel and stone with expansive plate-glass windows and cast iron columns.
The building opened in 1905 as Ottawa's first department store and served multiple retailers. In 1921 the federal government purchased it for office use.
The structure displays Chicago School design elements with three-part windows and ornamental details that still shape the streetscape today.
The building sits at a busy street corner with good public access to the area. Note that it functions as an office building today and is not open for interior visits.
A stone fragment fell from the cornice in 1964 and struck a pedestrian, prompting the complete removal of the ornamental detailing. This incident left a lasting mark on the building's appearance.
