Russell House, Historical hotel at Sparks Street and Elgin Street, Ottawa, Canada
The Russell House served as a central establishment in Ottawa, extending across the intersection of Sparks Street and Elgin Street, with multiple expansions throughout its existence.
Originally constructed in the 1840s as Campbell's Hotel, the building underwent major renovations in 1880 and remained Ottawa's primary hotel until its closure in 1925.
The hotel hosted numerous Canadian politicians and international performers, including Oscar Wilde and Anna Pavlova, during Ottawa's early years as the national capital.
The property contained ground-level retail spaces that continued operating even after the hotel section closed, serving local residents until the final demolition.
Governor-General Lord Stanley chose the Russell House as the location to announce the creation of the Stanley Cup in 1892, marking a significant moment in Canadian sports.
