Pioneers' Obelisk, Historic obelisk in Old Montreal, Canada
The Pioneers' Obelisk stands 12 meters tall, constructed from Stanstead granite with a quadrangular pedestal adorned by four bronze plaques at Place d'Youville.
The Montreal Historical Society commissioned this monument in 1893 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Montreal's establishment, unveiling it to the public in 1894.
Four bronze plaques on the pedestal display names of significant founders, including Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve, Jeanne Mance, and other early Montreal settlers.
Located at Place de la Grande-Paix-de-Montreal in the Ville-Marie district, the obelisk serves as a central reference point for exploring Old Montreal's heritage sites.
The installation of this 17-ton granite structure required forty horses to transport and position it at its original location in Place d'Youville.
