Tribute to Liberty, Memorial monument in Ottawa, Canada

Tribute to Liberty is a memorial in Ontario featuring two curved metal frames with 365 steel fins containing 4000 bronze rods arranged throughout. The structure is located in the Garden of Provinces and Territories and designed to allow sunlight to filter through its arrangement across the seasons.

The memorial was proposed in 2007 by Jason Kenney, then Secretary of State, after visiting a Soviet oppression memorial in Toronto's Masaryktown. This led to the creation of a dedicated space commemorating escape from persecution.

The memorial honors people who fled communist regimes and found refuge in Canada. It serves as a place where visitors can reflect on the journeys of survivors and their path to freedom.

The memorial is located in the Garden of Provinces and Territories and is open to the public. Visitors should note that the visual effect of the structure changes depending on the time of day and season as sunlight illuminates the bronze rods differently.

During the winter solstice, the structure opens to create a passage symbolizing the transition from darkness to freedom. This seasonal transformation demonstrates the subtle, functional design of the memorial.
