West Lodge

West Lodge is an apartment complex in Parkdale with two curved towers of 18 stories linked by a five-story central section. The building houses around 720 residential units and has a horizontal shape that spans across the neighborhood.

The building was constructed in 1964 as a residential project in a growing neighborhood. After maintenance problems emerged in the 1970s, the city took over its management, which led to significant legal disputes.

The building shows how residents came together to stand up for their rights and shape their community. Neighbors have worked actively to support one another and improve conditions where they live.

A convenience store on the second floor offers residents direct access to everyday items without leaving the building. The complex is located in a densely populated area with good access to public transit.

In 2020, residents transformed an empty unit into a community food bank to support neighbors during difficult times. This grassroots effort shows the solidarity and self-reliance within the community.
