The Gladstone Hotel is a five-story building with 55 rooms displaying Romanesque architecture featuring rough-cut stone, brick walls, and dramatic window arches. The structure houses guest rooms as well as a ground-floor bistro and bar serving food and drinks.
The building was constructed in 1889 and was early managed by Susanna Robinson, who ran it while raising her family after her husband's death. This period shaped its early identity as an important property in the West Queen West neighborhood.
The hotel runs an artist-in-residence program where selected creators spend two months working in studio spaces with their finished pieces displayed throughout the building. This ongoing program makes the space a gathering point for local artists and creative professionals.
The ground-floor restaurant serves breakfast including pancakes and poached eggs, while the bar creates cocktails with local ingredients and influences. Keep in mind the building contains historical features that contribute to the overall experience of your visit.
The building houses a manually operated Otis elevator from 1907 with original mechanical components still in use. This working lift is a rare surviving example of elevator technology from that era.
