Saint-Saphorin, Village in the Lavaux-Oron district, Switzerland

Saint-Saphorin is a small village on the northern shore of Lake Geneva, in the canton of Vaud, nestled among terraced vineyards. Narrow cobbled lanes run through it, leading to a central church with a bell tower that stands at the heart of the village.

The area around Saint-Saphorin was already settled in Roman times, as shown by a stone marker dated to the year 53. In the Middle Ages, the village was known as Glérolles before a landslide destroyed part of it and forced the church to be rebuilt on higher ground.

The vineyards around Saint-Saphorin are part of the Lavaux UNESCO World Heritage area, shaped by local farmers over many centuries. Small wine cellars in the village let visitors taste the local Chasselas wine directly from the producers.

The village sits directly on the shore of Lake Geneva and is easy to reach by train, with a local station nearby. Visitors exploring the vineyard trails should wear sturdy footwear, as the paths between the terraces can be steep and uneven.

The church of Saint-Saphorin, built between 1520 and 1530, stands directly on the foundations of a Roman building and a medieval chapel that came before it. This layering of three different eras in one small structure makes it one of the more unusual religious sites along the lake.
