Lugano Città–Stazione funicular, Historic funicular railway in Lugano, Switzerland
The Lugano Città–Stazione funicular connects the city center with the main railway station over a 220-meter track with a 53-meter rise. Modern cars accommodate around 100 passengers and complete the journey in less than 90 seconds.
The funicular opened in 1886 to connect the city center with the railway station, which had been built four years earlier. It solved the challenge of steep streets between the two areas and became an essential transport link.
The funicular links two neighborhoods and has been called Sassellina since 2016, named after the Sassello district where the lower station stands. Locals use it as a natural part of their daily journey through the city.
The funicular operates daily from early morning until midnight and is easy to reach from either the city center or the railway station. The short ride makes it convenient for quick transfers between the two areas while visiting.
The system uses specialized wheels with double flanges on one side of the cars, which simplifies switching at crossing points. This technical solution allows smooth operation on the tight route.
